Hard luck little man

So, this poor kid is obviously coming to terms with the All Blacks semi-final defeat. You meet all sorts on the Spanish Steps, after all, it is the place to see and be seen.

I'll be back

The legend is that if you throw a coin into the Trevi fountain, you'll return to see it again. Hope so, because it is quite beautiful.

Ein minuten bitte

Living in the UK means I get to see lots of churches and cathedrals, both at home and across Europe. But this one is undoubtedly the most spectacular of the lot ... which might be part of the reason why Martin Luther ended up famously saying "Ein minuten bitte" (as paraphrased by Eddie Izzard)?

Eddie Izzard: Martin Luther was a German fellow who pinned a note on a church door that said, "Hang on a minute!" Actually, he was German so, "Ein minuten bitte!"

When in Rome...

Rumour has it that photography is banned because the rights to reproduce imagery of the Sistine Chapel have been ceded to the company responsible for the restoration work. But none of the locals paid much attention to the rules, so neither did Teddybok.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

The Colosseum

2007 oct 12 rome img_6031 (by Dave Reinhardt)

No doubt this is one of the most impressive (remaining) buildings of the ancient world. Sight lines are enough to make the designers of the Emirates Stadium jealous and the claimed 20 minutes departure time for 50 000 spectators would make Transport for London envious.

But at the end of the day, there's that gnawing feeling that this place was built with the proceeds from the sacking of Jerusalem and the destruction of the 2nd Temple - and that's just not cool.
