Time to wash off the dust of history and chill out

Hangin' out with the kite surfers on Tel Aviv beachfront.

Simply breathtaking

There's nothing I could write to describe the Old City vista, seen here from the Mount of Olives.

Jerusalem Syndrome

The Jerusalem syndrome is the name given to a group of mental phenomena involving the presence of either religiously themed obsessive ideas, delusions or other psychosis-like experiences, that are triggered by, or lead to, a visit to the city of Jerusalem. It is not endemic to one single religion or denomination, but has affected Jews and Christians of many different backgrounds.

No really, it's true I tell you. I don't make this stuff up.

We arrived via Jaffa Gate, and paid homage to our little community on the tip of Africa.

Of course, we visited the Kotel / Western Wall - probably the holiest site in the entire Jewish world.

Back on the spice route (2)

Avdat is another town on the spice route, a few hundred km from Petra, on the route used to carry spices to Gaza from where they'd be shipped to Rome.

On the Nabatean spice trading route (1)

One of the most spectacular sights I've ever seen! Petra is literally carved out of the red sandstone hillsides.

The pictures of King Hussein I (d. 1999) and his son, the reigning monarch, King Abdullah II, are everywhere in Jordan.

The Treasury is one of the most spectacular sights in all of Petra. It stands dozens of metres tall in a dazzling red sandstone glimmer.

Little stands selling souvenirs are located throughout the site. Don't be tempted by the tourist prices - if you're interested, I have a cousin who runs a newly opened souvenir bazaar... let me take you, it's not far.

On the way over

At the Yitzchak Rabin border post between Israel (Eilat) and Jordan (Aqaba).

Saturday afternoon rituals

Admittedly not as exciting as being at the game, but watching the Gunners hold Chelsea to defeat in the Premiership still felt good.

Regent's Park

We're often here for a Sunday morning walk with our little cousins, but usually I'm tucked away in the camera bag. Today, with crummy overcast weather, I finally got to see the place myself. Not bad grazing ground.
